What Is an EI30 Fire-Resistant Door?

Fire safety is one of the most important elements in the design of hotels, student residences, hospitals, offices, public buildings, residential projects and other buildings with high occupancy.

During a fire, limiting the spread of fire and heat from one area to another can provide valuable time for occupants to evacuate safely and for emergency services to respond.

EI30 is a fire-resistance classification indicating that a door or building element can meet defined performance criteria for at least 30 minutes under fire exposure.

What Does EI30 Mean?

The letters “E” and “I” refer to different fire performance criteria:

  • E – Integrity: The ability to prevent the passage of flames and hot gases to the unexposed side.

  • I – Insulation: The ability to limit temperature rise on the unexposed side within defined criteria.

  • 30: The required performance period is 30 minutes.

Therefore, an EI30 fire-resistant door is not simply a door made from fire-resistant materials. The complete door assembly—including the door leaf, frame, seals, hinges, lock, closer and other components—needs to be designed and assessed as a system capable of achieving the required fire performance.

Where Are EI30 Fire Doors Used?

Depending on the fire safety strategy of a building, EI30 fire-resistant doors may be used in areas such as:

  • Hotels

  • Student residences

  • Hospitals and healthcare facilities

  • Offices

  • Residential and apartment projects

  • Public buildings

  • Stairways and escape routes

  • Technical rooms

  • Corridors

  • Other areas requiring fire compartmentation

The required fire-resistance classification should not be selected based solely on the door itself. The building type, fire safety design, applicable regulations and project requirements should all be considered.

Why Is the Door Leaf Alone Not Enough?

The fire performance of a fire-resistant door does not depend solely on the door leaf.

The complete door assembly may include:

  • Door leaf

  • Door frame

  • Intumescent or fire-resistant seals

  • Hinges

  • Lock and strike system

  • Door closer

  • Fire-resistant glazing, where applicable

  • Other fixing and installation components

These components work together as a system.

For this reason, simply manufacturing a door from fire-resistant materials does not automatically make it an EI30-rated fire door. Fire performance should be evaluated based on a tested and appropriately classified door assembly.

What Is the Difference Between EI30 and EI60?

The main difference between EI30 and EI60 is the duration of the classified fire performance.

EI30: 30 minutesEI60: 60 minutes

However, EI60 should not automatically be considered the better choice for every project. The required classification should be determined according to the building's fire safety design and applicable requirements.

EI30 and EN 1634-1

EN 1634-1 is an important reference standard for testing the fire resistance performance of doors, shutters, openable windows and similar building elements.

When evaluating an EI30 fire door, it is therefore important to look beyond the product description and examine the relevant test and classification documentation, including the tested configuration and system components.

What Should You Consider When Choosing an EI30 Fire Door?

When selecting an EI30 fire-resistant door for a project, consider:

  1. Test and classification documentation related to the fire performance.

  2. The dimensions, frame type and hardware configuration covered by the test.

  3. Compatibility between the door leaf and frame system.

  4. The suitability of fire-resistant seals and hardware.

  5. Whether the installation method matches the tested configuration.

  6. The fire safety requirements of the project.

  7. Whether the product is suitable for its intended application.

Effective fire safety is not achieved by the door alone. It is the result of the right product, the right components and the right installation working together as one tested system.
